Convent Avenue Studios

Convent Avenue Studios are a collection of three small and carefully placed loft dwellings designed by Rick Joy in his early architectural career. The site has been arranged into a series of private and semi-private courtyards - creating small pockets of daily in-habitation, and informal interaction between occupants.

Each of the three identical dwellings house a small kitchen-dining-living room on the ground floor and a loft bedroom and bathroom above. The use of thick earth walls with square windows punched into the facade, combined with a simple mono-pitch roof form creates a proportionally and aesthetically satisfying form.

Inside the house the simple palette of materials, and double height living space, creates a feeling of warmth and openess. The positioning of the windows has been well considered from both the inside and the outside. By keeping the windows square in shape, but of different sizes, a sense of uniformity and order is established.
